If you’ve ever wondered whether traveling with your autistic child is possible—or worth the effort—this post is for you. Family travel isn’t without its challenges, but trust me, the rewards far outweigh them.
Hi, I’m Kayla Squier, a mom of two, a family travel content creator, and the founder of Dream Jar Travels. Our family has learned firsthand that with the right strategies and mindset, travel can be one of the most enriching experiences for neurodiverse families.
Today, I’m sharing the tips, tricks, and real-life lessons that have helped us confidently navigate family adventures. Whether you’re dreaming of a relaxing resort stay or exploring new places with your kids, I hope my blog inspires you to pack those bags and create unforgettable memories, because after all, your family deserves these experiences like everyone else!
Our Journey to Embracing Travel as a Neurodiverse Family
Traveling isn’t always easy for us, but it’s my passion, and I refuse to give up on our dreams. no matter how wild they may seem. Between sensory sensitivities, strict routines, and the fear of the unknown, some initial trips with our kids felt like uncharted territory.
But we believe travel gives our children the opportunity to expand their horizons, build their confidence, and explore new people and places. Above all else, travel gives families a true opportunity to connect outside the day-to-day activities and demands of life.
One of the most powerful lessons we’ve learned is that family travel doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be meaningful. Every trip, no matter how big or small, has given us moments we’ll cherish forever.
Our Top Family Travel Tips for Neurodiverse Families
1. Plan Ahead, But Stay Flexible
Research your destination for autism-friendly accommodations and activities. For instance, we love finding resorts that have sensory-friendly amenities, quiet spaces, and inclusive kids’ clubs. However, being flexible with schedules helps us adjust to unexpected changes, like sensory overload or delayed flights.
2. Pack for Comfort and Familiarity
Bring comfort items from home, like noise-canceling headphones, preferred foods and favorite snacks, and a familiar toy or two. These small touches provide a sense of stability in new environments, helping to ease anxieties.
3. Start Small and Build Confidence
If traveling far feels daunting, start with an overnight staycation at a hotel or a weekend getaway close to home. As your child becomes more comfortable with the process and time away from home, gradually venture farther.
4. Communicate with Staff
Let hotel or airline staff know about your child’s needs. Most people are more than willing to accommodate, whether it’s securing a quieter room or boarding early to avoid crowds.
5. Prepare Your Child for the Journey
Talk about the trip in advance and show photos or videos of the destination. This has been a game-changer for our family. Role-playing what to expect (e.g., airport security) helps ease anxiety and builds excitement.
Why We Believe Every Family Deserves to Travel
Travel isn’t just a luxury, it’s an opportunity to grow, bond, and create core memories as a family. For us, it’s also a chance to help our son develop life skills, boost his confidence, and experience joy in new surroundings.
It’s also the hobby that lights my soul on fire. I have a wanderlust soul through and through, so travel helps me maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul—and a happy, healthy mama is the foundation for a thriving family unit. Can I get an amen?
Let’s Build a World of Inclusive Travel
More families are traveling with neurodiverse children, and the travel industry is slowly starting to catch up. By choosing destinations that prioritize accessibility and inclusivity, we can create demand for even more options.
