I didn’t realize Tanganyika Wildlife Park would be the ✨emotional support animal experience✨ my neurodivergent self needed.
This isn’t a zoo. It’s one of the most interactive, animal parks in the U.S. and a total dream for families, and animal-loving travelers.
I hand-fed a giraffe.
Sat with actual lemurs.
Met the famous baby hippo, Mars.
Watched otters pull toddler-level antics.
And had penguins swimming and flapping all around me. (Seriously, so cool.)

If my autistic kids don’t want to leave… that says everything. 🥹
We recently visited @bflyqc and I don’t say this lightly: this place was magic. From the moment we stepped in, I could see their curiosity ignite.
As a mom of two neurodivergent kids, I’m always observing, especially when we travel. I’m looking for signs that a space gets it. That it understands sensory needs. That it doesn’t just tolerate differences… but celebrates them.
This butterfly-themed attraction exceeded my expectations in all the best ways:
•A slower pace that never felt overwhelming
•Play areas allowing for sensory input (gross motor)
•And staff who didn’t blink twice when my kids needed extra time or space
This wasn’t a “hope it goes well” kind of experience. It was a “we’re safe, supported, and enjoying” one.
Autistic joy deserves space in the travel world. Family trips don’t have to be perfect, they just need to be possible.
And when destinations create environments where our kids feel free to be themselves?
That’s when the memories are made.

Don’t even start on the headphones or iPad because that’s not what this post is about. ⬇️
This is about the signs that helped lead to my daughter’s autism diagnosis.
We were in Mexico on a family vacation. Yes, she had screen time during dinner.
But if you spent the day swimming, building sandcastles, navigating unfamiliar settings and sensory overload… you’d understand why we used a familiar show as a regulating tool during one meal.
And I digress. 🙈
You don’t have to be nonverbal to be autistic.
Some signs are quiet. Some autistic traits get missed in girls. Some look like “bossy,” “quirky,” or “gifted.”
But early speech doesn’t cancel out neurodivergence. Neither does sensitivity, creativity, or being “advanced.”
Here are a few traits I noticed in my toddler:
• Spoke in full sentences before 16 months
• Repetitive body movements (like belly hitting)
• Constant need to chew, bite, or mouth items
• Impulsivity and occasional bolting
• Wanted control over everything
• Emotional overwhelm, especially during transitions
(Even if it was heading somewhere fun like the park)
I didn’t learn these from a textbook. I lived them.
I’m a mom raising two autistic kids while navigating my own late-diagnosed neurodivergence, hearing loss, and legal blindness. That’s 3 hidden disabilities, none of them visible in a vacation photo.
This video isn’t here to diagnose your child. It’s to spark awareness. Because the signs we miss, in girls, and in ourselves matter.

Autistic children are not something to be feared, wished away or a problem to fix.
The real fears parents face are sending their kids to school, terrified they may not come home.
What keeps me up at night isn’t autism, it’s the thought of my child being bullied, harmed, or taken from this world too soon.
As a parent raising two autistic children, I can most certainly say I have fears everyday surrounding them but it’s never been because of their autism diagnosis.
My children are not a cautionary tale.
They are my joy.
The autism rates are not a crisis, it’s clarity. It gives us language, understanding, and a new way to connect.
So when I hear people blame Tylenol, or vaccines, or start fear-mongering around neurodivergence, it breaks my heart.
Because what we need more of is support. Compassion. Truth.
You don’t need to fix your child. You didn’t do anything wrong, and the only “blame” is that we can’t fix genetics, and why would we want to? The beauty of life is variety, differences, and how we all have a purpose on earth.
And your autistic child? They are already whole.

We’ve done Florida 6 times in 3 years, with two autistic kids. So trust me when I say: it’s possible.
4 Disney trips. 3 Universal.
And in April 2023? We tackled both parks in one go.
Our first visit? No diagnosis. Just instincts, hope, and two babies in tow.
Now? We’ve got rhythm. We’ve got systems.
And we’ve got proof that vacation memories are still possible, even when your journey looks different.
Here’s what we’ve learned along the way:
Florida makes it easier for families like ours to say yes to a getaway.
From sensory guides and adaptive services…
to parks and hotels that actually consider neurodivergent needs, this state has given us options, not obstacles.
We’ve had meltdowns. We’ve had magic.
But the biggest shift?
We stopped waiting until things felt easy…
and just decided to try.
Not because we had it all figured out.
But because our kids deserve core memories.
We built our trips around what actually works:
familiar foods, flexible plans, movement breaks, noise protection.
And the second something didn’t work? We pivoted.
That’s what travel looks like for our family.
Not perfect. Not always smooth.
But possible, and so worth it!
