Ann Arbor, Michigan surprised us in the best way. It is warm, welcoming, and filled with sensory-friendly activities, patient staff, flexible dining, and play spaces that helped my autistic kids regulate, have fun, and explore confidently.

In partnership with @annarbor to share how inclusive, family-friendly travel can feel when a destination truly supports autistic kids.
What if we stopped avoiding travel… and chose the trip our autistic kids deserve?
Every child, neurodivergent or neurotypical, deserves to experience the world beyond their neighbourhood. Not every destination makes that feel possible, but Ann Arbor, Michigan showed us what supportive family travel can look like.
We explored incredible indoor play spaces like @ann_arbor_hands_on @wrtsannarbor @launchannarbor and @dinoland.annarbor and even enjoyed a peaceful walk through @matthaeinichols 🌿
The restaurants we visited, like @savas_ann_arbor @grizzlypeakbrewingco and @eatunionrec had patient staff, flexible menus, and zero judgement when my kids needed to move or regulate. That alone made such a difference.
One of the biggest highlights? The animal encounters at @thecreatureconservancy — my kids were completely engaged, especially when they saw the reptiles up close.
And of course… delicious treats. We loved our mid-day stop at @themilkshakefactory and you have to check out @rockpapermi for gifts, goodies, and the cutest Taylor Swift items. 👏
And on our final day, I even carved out time to unwind at @k.westskinbodyspirit 🫶🏼 The massage + craniosacral treatment were exactly what I needed to relax, regulate, and recharge before heading home.
Ann Arbor is absolutely a family-friendly destination: warm, welcoming, and surprisingly inclusive. It’s a place where my autistic kids felt supported and where I felt safe, seen, and grateful for the way this city shows up for families like ours.

The best thing we can do when traveling with autistic kids is support their needs and make the boarding process as calm as possible.
And for many neurodivergent children, pre-boarding can make all the difference.
Most parents don’t realize this, but if your child has autism, a sensory disability, ADHD, a visual or hearing impairment, or any disability that makes the airport overwhelming…
You have the right to pre-board your flight (yes, even before business class).
This isn’t a perk. It’s not something you “earn.” It’s not a favour or special treatment.
It’s an accessibility accommodation protected under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) in the US and the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations (ATPDR) in Canada.
And what does this actually change for families like ours? It means:
Fewer crowds
Less noise & pressure
More time and space for your child to settle and regulate
I’m Kayla, a visual and hearing impaired mom traveling with two autistic kids who’ve now taken over 40 flights at ages 4 and 5. For them (and for me), pre-boarding is a lifeline.
We board before the rest of the plane, alongside others who need assistance, which gives us time to:
Get to our seats & store our luggage
Prepare the kids & avoid full boarding chaos
And honestly? It has been a GAME changer.
But on our most recent flight home, @aircanada called pre-boarding… then boarded business class at the exact same time. The jet bridge instantly became loud and crowded.
My autistic child turned red, struggled to regulate their breathing, and panicked.
All because the one step designed to support disabled travelers wasn’t followed.
So here’s your reminder:
If pre-boarding hasn’t been called, this is your right, and it’s okay to tell the gate agent you need accessibility pre-boarding.
And @aircanada (and all airlines)…
Please do better.
Calling true PRE-BOARDING should be standard, consistent, and non-negotiable. Families like mine depend on it.

Because traveling with your autistic child shouldn’t feel intimidating. It should feel exciting. Empowering. Possible.
That’s why I’m so passionate about what I do, finding destinations, hotels, resorts, and attractions that aren’t just family-friendly, but open to supporting kids who need a little extra care.
I’m a mom raising two autistic kids, a wanderluster at heart, and a travel and wellness content creator on a mission to make inclusive, accessible travel the norm, not the exception.
@sensiraresorts isn’t a certified autism property, and they don’t claim to be sensory-friendly but what they do have is heart. Compassion. And a staff that made our stay feel easy.
When my autistic child with restrictive eating couldn’t find anything he felt safe eating, the staff brought out a full plate of fresh fruit without hesitation. No side-eyes. No awkwardness. Just support.
And when we tried the Adventures Club, they took the time to kneel down, connect with my kids, and let them ease into the space before we decided if they’d stay. It wasn’t rushed. It was respectful.
They even have:

✔️ Rock climbing wall
✔️ Scavenger hunts
✔️ A mechanical bull
✔️ And a zipline (yes, really)

Sending out party bus vibes, minus the hangover, because we were getting tipsy on tacos and uninterrupted conversation.

My final night in Kansas City, Kansas was the ultimate send-off after an unforgettable week in the Sunflower State. It all started with the @tbexevents travel conference in Wichita, where I soaked up strategy, storytelling, and serious inspo from fellow creators.
Then came a jam-packed FAM trip (that’s “familiarization trip” for those new to travel lingo), where I got to experience family-friendly, inclusive destinations across the state.
And then… this. 🎤🌮
The @kcktacotrail is a foodie adventure featuring 60+ authentic taquerias across the city. But this night? We took it to the next level, with a private party bus, neon lights, music, and tacos that had us rating every bite like it was a Top Chef finale.
We weren’t just eating, we were connecting.
If you’re a parent pouring from an empty cup, this is your sign:
You deserve joy.
You deserve adventure that fills your soul.
You deserve a seat on the bus where no one’s asking for snacks or screen time.
Moms need space to be more than a mom.
